A place were everyone knows your name

Generation X had MTV. Good for them. Look at what it’s degenerated into these days…

Generation Y, has Google, Blogger WordPress, Flickr, Youtube and our personal favourite – Facebook. I’m not going to tell you why it’s better than Friendster or Myspace but instead let’s discuss the top 5 reasons why it’s catching on so fast, particularly in Gen-Y Malaysia.

  1. Virtual socialising : Poke, hadouken or spank friends while you put economic analysis together in office at 9pm. God knows it’s too late at night to meet up for dinner and you’ll look like an idiot sitting in a mamak in your corporate clothes. Without Facebook, would you even call that old high school friend or know about his/her latest “complicated relationship”?

  2. Name Droping, Networking and Groups : Cool by association takes a whole new meaning in Facebook. Show off your elite education, arty-farty friends and even how you know them without actually “saying” anything at all. Admit it, you really do want people to know you partied with KinkyBlueFairy back in ‘99 and went to that posh ivy league and interned for ANB AMRO.

  3. Privacy Settings : Show off your bikini tanlines to your mates without worrying about the moral police or Chief Executive Tight-Ass catching up on you. You can even be friends with that weird stalker girl but restrict her acccess to your beach holiday pictures, ensuring that she won’t be bitching about your boob job to half the office.

  4. Tagging : You only dress up to the nines and party once a week, but you still want to be seen by half the klang valley, tag yourself and your mates in pictures and it’s good practice for when you start appearing in malaysia tatler.

  5. Pets, drinks, lingerie and bakery food : Go crazy – the more you give, the more you get – do stuff you never thought you’d do in real life from buying S&M lingerie to baking a cheesecake for friends.

Why this?

I’ve been toying with the idea of setting up a place where I could publish some thoughts on corporate culture and stuff that affects the Gen-Y workforce – or what’s left of it – here in Malaysia. Understandably, I’ve been too busy being a starry-eyed, ambitious, workaholic to get this blog up earlier.

This weekend, my work laptop went on the fritz, giving me an unofficial holiday of sorts from the spreadsheets I was supposed to spend my Sunday night preparing. So instead of catching up on the Sunday papers (which I’ve not done in ages…) or Facebooking, I’m here – writing this.

Now to think of other stuff to fill this blog with…
